Gangster Rap Pronounced DEAD: Kid Cudi, Drake, Wale

Gangster Rap Dead? Well, yeah, according to GQ magazine who shocked the hell out of us after putting 3 black men featuring Drake, Wale, and Kid Cudi in their magazine. The three earned their spot in the magazine as, and we quote, “The Gangster Killers“. GQ states:

”Have you been listening to hip-hop this year? If not, we’ve got good news: The gangster persona is finally dead, and these are the kids who killed it. One song at a time, they built a new era in which duct-taped kilos, exotic firearms, and freaky girls are out and real life is the focus.

That can still mean trumped-up egos and battle raps, but it also means family, drama, vicious hangovers, and regular chicks who will make good love to you, then stomp out your heart. (Weed? Weed is always in.) Wale is as famous for his live shows as for the slick-witted lyricism of his debut, Attention Deficit.

Hmm.. when we watch music videos we still see “freaky women”. Well regardless of what GQ Mag has to say, it’s good to see these three rappers who made a break through in hip-hop music for 2009, featured in the very popular magazine.

Kid Cudi is the cutup who scored with the stoner anthem “Day N Nite” and his album Man on the Moon. And then there’s Drake, who found himself turning down multimillion-dollar offers after his single “Best I Ever Had” exploded. (It helps that the girls like Drake. A lot.) Drake’s debut, Thank Me Later is easily the most anticipated album of 2010 So what do these underdogs thing about being cast as gangster slayers?

“The dope boy is going to be a fixture of black culture as long as “thug” is a legitimate option alongside a job” Drake says. But I’m not going to rap about how much crack I’ve sold.” Cudi also laughs at the idea of talking tough. “Anybody from cleveland will tell you I wasn’t in the streets” he says. “Ask them! They’ll say, ‘Scott was the goofy class clown.”

Rihanna Season Has Begun + Drake is a Rihanna Stan

We are seeing an overload of Rihanna already in the past couple weeks. This woman has been on everything you can think of. Her publicist is a beast, because we went from not hearing from Rihanna in 8 months to wanting her being bombarded with Rihanna News.

The reigning Pop Princess made a stop at MTV to discuss everything from her upcoming album to the Chris Brown saga. Are we the only ones who would just like to move pass this whole domestic violence thing? Rihanna first appearance was on “Its One with Alexa Chung” (man do we dislike Alexa Chung). RiRi appeared to be in very good spirits throughout the entire interview. This has to be one of her best interviews to date. 106 & Park needs to take some notes.

We are still trying to get used to this whole blond hair thing. We are fans of the jet black short hair cut, but she does have to switch it up from time to time. We are wondering why she received such a big honor and she hasn’t really done much this year.

We know you all remember those rumors that Rihanna & Drake were getting it poppin earlier this year. Well Drake is showing his girl Rihanna some support by talking about her upcoming album, Rated R, to Rap-Up.
We still think these two would make a very cute couple. They give off that Jay-Z & Beyonce vibe…
Here is what Drizzy Drake had to say about Rihanna’s new material:

“Rihanna has a great album, she’s got great records that she’s using, she’s got great records that she’s not even using that she has for a later date. I’m excited for her. She deserves everything that she gets.”

Drake also speaks on the Russian Roulette single..

“It’s a cool little record. I don’t know if personally that’s the route I would’ve gone for a single choice, I can only say that because I’ve been around and heard the music that she’s coming with other than that record.”
“We all make personal choices. It’s like the same way I shot a certain type of video for ‘Best I Ever Had.’ Maybe that’s where she’s at emotionally right now. I think if I heard it in the mix with the other ones, I would probably find more appreciation for it as opposed to it being the only thing that people are hearing from her right now after so long.”

“We did do some great work together and hopefully it’ll find it’s place on some project one day. The record we have is great. It’s a special record, so for it not to make it, I know something had to click. It’s all good. I think the project’s gonna be great no matter what. There’s been so much media attention swirling around her, that in order for her to get back to the music, she couldn’t have any ties to any of the stuff that’s been going on. I think she just wants to start fresh.”

Drake has put an all-star line up together for his song “Forever”. Kanye West, Eminem, and Lil Wayne all blessed the track for the soundtrack to Lebron James documentary “More Than Game“. The video was shot down in Miami and directed by Hype Williams (of course)…

Melanie Fiona dropped her video for her hot new single “It Kills Me” on the net, and also debuted it on 106 and Park last night. The slow ballad is HOT, and the video features sexy Latin actor, Adam Rodriguez, from CSI: Miami and Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself. Melanie’s album “The Bridge” has a new release date of November 3rd, 2009.

The lovely Amerie is back with a new video for her single, “Heard Em All”. She is dancing, looking great, and giving us a bit of drama in the clip. Amerie’s album also drops on November 3rd, and it looks like she and Melanie Fiona will be battling for that top spot.

Lastly, Birdman dropped a video last night for his song “Money to Blow”, featuring Drake and Lil’ Wayne. The vid definitely could of been better, but check it out for yourselves.

Chrisette Michelle Gets Weak for Rappers

Chrisette Michele is not a sex symbol or anything like that, so we don’t normally look at her or hear about her in relationships or dating around the industry. Well ATF thinks that Chrisette has a thing for these new rappers in the game.

Drake appeared in her first video “Epiphany“, we were pleased to see that happen. This time around Chrisette has snagged Wale has her leading man.

BET Hip Hop Award Nominations

After all the hype about the VMAs, BET is back with another one of their award specials. The BET Hip Hop Awards celebrates all things Hip-Hop. They even have an award for Best Hip-Hop Blog. Kanye West is ahead of the pack leading with nine nominations include MVP of the Year, Best Live Performer and Lyricist of the Year.

Right behind Ye’ is Lil Wayne and Jay-Z with seven nods each. Drake is nominated for a few awards, which we are pretty hype about. The BET Hip Hop Awards will be hosted by Mike Epps and are slated to air October 27 at 8pm.

Fab Friday Music Review: Drake, Trey Songz, Melanie Fiona & More

Its Friday and we would like to give you some of our favorite videos and new music that hit the internet this week. Trey Songz and Drake have 2009 on lock and are expected have a successful year in 2010. Finally Trey is coming out of the “underground” r&b scene and is being more recognized. We also have high hopes for Melanie Fiona who has an incredible voice and dropped a new single this week.

“Successful” has been in rotation on the radios in NYC since spring, so it’s about time the video dropped! Just like “Best I Ever Had“, this video is pretty dumb and doesn’t match with they lyrics–but it never hurts to watch two sexy men singing simultaneously .

Melanie Fiona is finally getting some radio time and recognition in NYC. After seeing her perform many times at venues throughout the city, we are die-hard fans of this beauty that has one of the strongest voices of 2009. Miss. Fiona dropped a single, “It Kills Me” earlier this week.

Chris Brown and his bow tie have been all over the news this week. Breezy teamed up with the vocoder, Lil Bow Wow, and Pleasure P and dropped the single, ” Whatever You Like”.

The day J. Boog and Lil Feeze released their single, “Bounce“, they also made a *surprise* appearance at R&B Live held at BB Kings Monday night. This single is off of the soundtrack Bring It On: Fight To The Finish. It’s good to see these two are making a come back from the early 2000’s.

For all of our Brooklyn Hip Hop Heads, check out Bekay’s debut video for his single “Brooklyn Bridge” featuring Masta Ace and produced by DJ Babu (Dilated Peoples). This is is the first single/video in promotion for the release of his long awaited album, ‘Hunger Pains’ which drops November 10th, 2009 through Coalmine Records.

As a vocal coach and producer, Rob Lewis has worked on several hit albums, including Diddy’s “Press Play” and Christina Aguilera’s “Back to Basics”. Lewis was also featured on MTV’s Making the Band with Diddy and pop girl group Danity Kane. He is also responsible for putting the music production together for Toni Braxton’s “Revealed” Flamingo Hotel show in Las Vegas.

He is now venturing out on his own to make a name for himself as an artist. His first single, “Brokenhearted”, is a soul record that deals with love that’s lost because of one’s own faults. His debut album, Orchestrator of a Renaissance, set to drop in fall 2009, chronicles the rebirth (renaissance) of his own spirituality and consciousness, and through his musicianship, arranging, song writing and production.

Its Friday and we would like to give you some of our favorite videos and new music that hit the internet this week. From Drake to Mary J. Blige…This week gave a variety of music, the music game is really turning around.

Drake is coming with FIRE and he’s bringing out some all-stars to back him up. Drake’s up and coming album is said to save Hip-Hop, and we are guessing rappers are agreeing with that statement. Kanye West, Eminem, and Lil’ Wayne have all jumped on one track to show love to the rising star of the rap game. Eminem’s tired self could have sat down. Beyonce’s team has leaked another track that was left off the I Am… Sasha Fierce album. Slow Love is a ballad that should have been placed on the Beyonce side of the album. It would have spiced up the album a little more. We can’t wait to hear another album from the diva, but she did state that she would be taking a two year break after this tour..

Mary J. Blige is just never gonna take a break from music. Mary has released a video for single “Stronger“. The video is pretty lame and the whole Lebron James throwback footage is kind of distracting. The video was made to go along with Lebron’s new documentary about his child-hood basketball team. Overall the video and song is wack, but we will let you draw your own conclusion.

September 11th is right around the corner, and folks are counting down to the return of Jay-Z. It’s not like that dude really left. But it has been a long time since his “The Blue Print” days. The latest leaked track off “The Blue Print 3″ is “Off That” which features earlier mentioned artist Drake. We are really digging this track, it’s perfect for a club setting. Jay-Z and Drake have a hit on their hands with this one.

Music News: Timbaland Presents Shock Value 2

Timbaland is not done with trying to be an artist yet. The super producer is putting together a sequel to his highly successful “Shock Value” album. The album Shock Value 2 is set to have appearances from Chris Brown, Estelle, Daughtry, and none other than Drake. The album will also reunite Timbo with Keri Hilson and Justin Timberlake, whose careers he help define…

Anything that Timbaland touches turns out dope. Shock Value produced hit singles, “The Way I Are,” “Scream,” “Give It To Me,” and “Apologize (Remix)“, which all charted high on Billboard. There is no set release date, but just hearing this news has got us excited all ready.

Its Friday and we would like to give you some of our favorite videos and new music that hit the internet this week. From Jay-Z’s long awaited video release, to Young Money’s dropped artist, Omarion, it’s been a good week full of new music.

We revealed to our readers the trailer to “Run This Town” last week and were pretty eager to see the full video.

Word has it Omarion got dropped from Young Money before he could even drop a single. Well, Omarion’s “I Get It In” ft Lil Wayne was leaked earlier this week.

R. Kelly is trying to make a comeback by putting ATL artist Keri Hilson on his single, “Number One.” The video was released earlier this week. R. Kelllyyy babay! (Thumbs DOWN). Keri sounds great on the track though!

Bow Wow has just officially signed to Cash Money Millionaires. This is probably the only offer he had on the table. Omarion is also signed to Young Money, next we’re going to hear that B2k is getting back together and another Scream Tour is around the corner..

After his last album flopped we don’t really see Bow Wow doing anything musically. He is currently wrapping up a film with Ice Cube and we’re guessing that film is the best alley for him.
