Gangster Rap Pronounced DEAD: Kid Cudi, Drake, Wale

Gangster Rap Dead? Well, yeah, according to GQ magazine who shocked the hell out of us after putting 3 black men featuring Drake, Wale, and Kid Cudi in their magazine. The three earned their spot in the magazine as, and we quote, “The Gangster Killers“. GQ states:

”Have you been listening to hip-hop this year? If not, we’ve got good news: The gangster persona is finally dead, and these are the kids who killed it. One song at a time, they built a new era in which duct-taped kilos, exotic firearms, and freaky girls are out and real life is the focus.

That can still mean trumped-up egos and battle raps, but it also means family, drama, vicious hangovers, and regular chicks who will make good love to you, then stomp out your heart. (Weed? Weed is always in.) Wale is as famous for his live shows as for the slick-witted lyricism of his debut, Attention Deficit.

Hmm.. when we watch music videos we still see “freaky women”. Well regardless of what GQ Mag has to say, it’s good to see these three rappers who made a break through in hip-hop music for 2009, featured in the very popular magazine.

Kid Cudi is the cutup who scored with the stoner anthem “Day N Nite” and his album Man on the Moon. And then there’s Drake, who found himself turning down multimillion-dollar offers after his single “Best I Ever Had” exploded. (It helps that the girls like Drake. A lot.) Drake’s debut, Thank Me Later is easily the most anticipated album of 2010 So what do these underdogs thing about being cast as gangster slayers?

“The dope boy is going to be a fixture of black culture as long as “thug” is a legitimate option alongside a job” Drake says. But I’m not going to rap about how much crack I’ve sold.” Cudi also laughs at the idea of talking tough. “Anybody from cleveland will tell you I wasn’t in the streets” he says. “Ask them! They’ll say, ‘Scott was the goofy class clown.”

After all the hype about the VMAs, BET is back with another one of their award specials. The BET Hip Hop Awards celebrates all things Hip-Hop. They even have an award for Best Hip-Hop Blog. Kanye West is ahead of the pack leading with nine nominations include MVP of the Year, Best Live Performer and Lyricist of the Year.

Right behind Ye’ is Lil Wayne and Jay-Z with seven nods each. Drake is nominated for a few awards, which we are pretty hype about. The BET Hip Hop Awards will be hosted by Mike Epps and are slated to air October 27 at 8pm.

We had the pleasure of attending Jay-Z’s 9/11 “Answer the Call” concert last night at Madison Square Garden (Shout out to Aleesha Smalls and Monee Perry on the tickets), and the energy in the place was like NO OTHER! Jay-Z performed some of his biggest hits for a full two hours (from 9pm – 11pm), and was joined on stage by the likes of superstars such as Rihanna, Beyonce, Diddy, Mary J. Blige, John Mayer, Santigold, Kanye West, (Amber Rose was seen dancing on stage in the corner. You can’t miss her) Kid Cudi, Pharrell (Swoon!), and Swizz Beatz (Where was Alicia Keys though?).

Additionally, celebrity fans such as Justin Timberlake, Fabolous, Tina Knowles, Adrienne Bailon, Gov. Patterson, Angie Martinez, Miss Info, and Wale and J.Cole were spotted in the audience enjoying the show.

“Innovative & Creative…Kid Cudi’s album is going to change the game“ Sylvia Rhone, Universal Motown Records, said as she introduced Kid Cudi’s album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day.

The staff from ATF was invited to an intimate album listening party for Kid Cudi held at Griffin in the trendy Meatpacking District. Many bloggers (Blogxilla, Lowkey, 2dopeboyz) and rapper 88 Keys was spotted bopping his head to the album.

Notorious B.I.G.’s daughter T’yanna Wallace celebrated her Sweet Sixteen this past weekend at Taj. She honored her late father at her party by having a pin of his face on her dress over her heart.

According to the NYDailyNews.com, the party theme was candy. She skipped down the red carpet to “Candy Girl” by New Edition in her hot pink dress filled with candy on it and matching Nike sneakers (real cute). Kid Cudi’s Album Cover Leaked

Kid Cudi just leaked his album cover for his debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day. The cover is very artistic but it looks like it has been done before, sort of like something Kanye West or Common would do. We are hoping he has success in sales for this album, but really, how old is that song “Day n Night“? We were jamming to that ish last summer, and that is reportedly the lead single. Man on the Moon: The End of Day is set to drop on September 15th. The week after Jay-Z drops The Blue Print 3.

Kid Cudi Goes To TV

Surprise, Suprise! Kid Cudi, just like many other rappers and singers, goes to acting. He will join Mark Whalberg on the new HBO comedy series “How To Make It In America” as Domingo Dean, named after his brother. The show is about the main characters trying to hustle their way through New York in pursuit of the American dream. Hopefully, this will be another HBO hit.
