Custom Built Ford Pick-Up Truck Is Made Of Wood!
If you thought that trucks could only be built from aluminum or steel well think again! The first cars were largely made of steel. In time, aluminum became the metal of choice after World War I. By the 1960s, fiberglass began catching on because of how lightweight and easy to mold the material is. One man had his Ford truck custom-built out of an unusual material, though: wood!
And it’s a beauty!
Al Schoffelman of Tea, South Dakota inherited a ’79 Ford Ecoline and some other car parts from a family member who passed away. The body of the vehicle was rusted out, so Schoffelman stripped it all away and began fiddling with the engine and frame.
When he had the inside of the vehicle in great condition, he just needed an outside: a body to encase it.
The creative woodworker designed and built the body of his truck entirely out of wood—oak, to be specific. He designed it, cut and sanded the wood, then put the whole thing together himself.
“I had a rough idea what I wanted to do,” Schoffelman said.
“I would stand back in the shop or sit on the bench and see if it looked right. If it didn’t, I would take that off and start with something different.”
Schoffelman, a cabinet maker, took months to complete the project and faced a lot of challenges. In the end, his effort was worth it.
The master car craftsman says he’s always still tinkering with his car to improve it.
“I have a couple of things I want to do to this truck yet,” Al said. “It is like any project: you are never done with it.”
