3 Ways You Are Making Life Harder For Yourself

Life can be tough enough, but many of us bring even more problems on ourselves. If you have any of the following five habits, you’re probably making life a lot harder than it needs to be.

Making Assumptions

You assume the grocery store clerk purposely short-changed. You assume your boyfriend wants to break up with you because he’s quiet tonight. You assume your grandmother knew you wanted her antique tea set that she gave to your cousin.

Stop assuming. Clerks make mistakes. Guys get tired. Grandmas don’t read minds. And you don’t need to get yourself all worked up about the world conspiring against you, when it’s not. You know what they say happens when you assume, right?

Needless Worrying

Does your mind conjure images of the worst case scenario for everything? A rash is skin cancer, someone forgets to call and you assume they’re in the hospital, you panic at any ‘official’ looking mail—in your mind, everything is potential disaster.

The funny thing about the human brain: it can’t tell the difference between what you’re thinking and what’s actually happening. When you let your imagination run away with horrifying ideas, your body reacts to them stress-wise as though they were really happening. Don’t focus on the negative, or that’s all you’ll see.

You Don’t Let Go

How much time do you waste in a day berating yourself for your own mistakes? How many relationships (with friends, family or lovers) have you had turn sour because you couldn’t forgive someone for something they did or said? How many times have you thought you’ll never be happy because x, y or z didn’t happen to you?

You are clinging to things in the past that you can’t change, and letting them affect the future. Learn to wipe that slate clean and move on, for your own good.
