Teeth become stained or discolored for many reasons. Some people are born with discolored teeth. Childhood illnesses and fever can cause tooth discoloration, as can an excess of flouride. Smoking, of course, will stain teeth over time as will drinking coffee. Poor dental hygeine results in a buildup of plaque which will discolor teeth over time. Fortunately it is never too late because there are remedies that can help whiten your teeth and have you smiling confidently.
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has been used for centuries as a cleaner. It will take stains off the teeth in much the same way that it can be used to take stains off a bathtub – by scrubbing them off. Baking soda is safe to use in the mouth, even if you swallow some of it.
Put toothpaste on a toothbrush, dip the brush into baking soda, and brush your teeth. You can also just wet a toothbrush and then dip it into baking soda and brush your teeth for a minute or less. Make sure you rinse your mouth out thoroughly. Start off with a couple of times a week and monitor the results. Baking soda is abrasive so it remove stains from your teeth by scraping them off over time. Usually people start seeing a difference within a few weeks.
Baking soda can damage the teeth, scraping off pieces of enamel, if you use it too often. If you start feeling any pain or discomfort make sure you always consult a dentist before you continue.
