Overcoming A Codependent Relationship
Codependency means always having the need to either be in control or be with someone. Codependency in relationships can lead to a very unhealthy relationship, as it can be like a poison. Symptoms of codependency are perfectionism, depression, inability to control your emotions and feeling the need to control everything and everyone around you. A relationship takes two people and if you or your partner is codependent, it can bring problems and tensions. If you feel that you may be codependent on your partner, there are steps you can take to overcome this problem.
Be honest.
One common problem in codependent relationships is the need to control your partner. You may feel that your partner needs to change or else neither of you will be happy. The first step in overcoming a codependent relationship is to be honest with your partner about how you feel. Let them know what you want to change and let them know exactly how you are feeling. If you are having control issues, you need to tell your partner.
Take a break.
After you have told your partner your true feelings, it might be a good idea to spend some time apart. You need time to find your true self and build up the confidence you need to have a healthy relationship. Take special time to find out who you are, what you want, and what you can change in your life to overcome your codependent issues. This will also give your partner time to think about how they can change based on your honest conversation. Being apart gives you time to miss each other and decide what is best for the relationship.
Stay positive.
When taking a break from your relationship, it is easy to fall into a depression or feel neglected. In order to overcome your codependent issues, you must think positive. Think about all that is good in your relationship and all the good times you have had. Do not automatically assume that the break in your relationship will only tear you apart. In many cases, couples who take a break find themselves back together and even stronger. Control your emotions and learn to view life in a positive way.
Codependency can be considered a disease and if you feel you need professional help, it is available. If you are serious about fixing yourself in order to fix your relationship, you can do it!
