Having a Substantial Derrière is Good for Your Health
For the past seven years, the world has changed their ideas about what makes a woman’s body beautiful. In the past, it might have been a female that was slim all over, but perhaps had some chest enhancements. Today, that has changed, and it is all about the booty. From Kim Kardashian, to J.Lo, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, the big butt and small waist is in. You probably remember Sir Mix-A-Lot’s famous phrase, “My anaconda don’t want none unless she’s got buns hon.”
Well, there might also be some good news attached to all this derriere frenzy, studies show that a large bottom might actually be good for your health. According to researchers at the University of Oxford, people who have most of their body fat accumulated around their thighs and backside are more likely to produce hormones that metabolize sugar. This means they are also less likely to develop high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. On the other hand, those who stored most of their body fat around their abdomen had a higher risk of developing health problems related to obesity.
This is due to the fact that fat stored in the stomach is more metabolically active and sends fatty matter throughout the body. In addition, whenever stomach fat is lost, it releases what are called cytokines (a small protein.) These cytokines are linked to inflammation in the body on top of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Fat stored in the rear is more stable, thereby releasing fewer cytokines. Then there is the evidence that a big butt can lead to a longer life and higher levels of intelligence, not only in the individual, but also among their children.
Lastly, there is the question of why men like small waists and large butts. Gordon G. Gallup Jr., an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Albany states, “The reason narrow waists and broad hips are so prized — the reason males rate these as being attractive, even though they don’t have any insight into why they do — is two-fold. It means, if a woman has a narrow waist, she’s not pregnant. And if she has broad hips it means that the underlying skeletal morphology is probably such that she’d be able to have a relatively unencumbered childbirth.”
To put it more succinctly, in the words of Sir Mix-A-Lot, “You can do side bends or sit ups, but please don’t lose that butt.”
